Year of the Mountains: Eco Himal Wins Prestigious Award

Eco Himal - the Society for Ecological Co-operation Alps-Himalaya - has been honoured with the prestigious Swiss award, the King Albert Medal of Merit, for its achievements in promoting sustainable Himalayan development. The Foundation honours persons and institutions who have made an exceptional contribution towards protecting the world's mountain environments.

The Gold Medal of Merit was presented to Eco Himal at a ceremony held in St Moritz, Switzerland. Other recipients were two scientists for their contribution towards the UN Mountain Agenda, a Swiss environmentalist, and the network of European Alpine communities "Allianz in den Alpen". The first recipient of the King Albert award was Lord John Hunt, leader of the 1953 Everest expedition which brought Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary to the summit.

The award comes at an appropriate time for Eco Himal which celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2002.

has awarded in accordance with its statutes to Eco Himal the honour of the KING ALBERT MEDAL OF MERIT

Eco Himal, an international non-governmental, non-profit association founded in 1991, based in Salzburg, Austria, supports ecological, social and cultural development programmes in Nepal and Tibet in partnership with local organisations and experts. A prime example of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN A HIMALAYAN COMMUNITY is the construction of a small hydroelectric power plant in Thame in the Sagarmatha National Park of Nepal supplying Namche Bazar and its environment with electricity. The project, together with additional initiatives involving solar energy, clearly demonstrates how eco-political needs of society can effectively be met, saving fuel-wood and reducing excessive deforestation.

In addition to energy and infrastructure projects Eco Himal focuses its attention on poverty alleviation through rural development, on biodiversity conservation, on promotion of a sustainable mountain tourism, and on assistance in protecting Nepal's rich cultural heritage.
