Restoration of Monasteries
Pema Chöding Monastery
Pema Chöding, one of the oldest monasteries on
the central Tibetan plateau, is situated near Peiku Tso (tso
= lake), with the mountain Shisa Pangma (8,000m) towering above
it.
Eco Himal supports the following restoration measures:
- protection of the old frescoes
- renovation of the altar room and adjoining prayer room
- improvement of the monks' accommodation
- reconstruction of the stupa in front of the monastery.
Rombuk Monastery
Rombuk Monastery is located en route
to Everest Base Camp at 5000 m. It is affiliated with the
famous Tengboche Monastery in Khumbu
on the Nepalese side of Mt. Everest.
During the cultural revolution, the buildings were destroyed and
only the foundations remained. In 1992, Eco Himal started to rebuild
the Gompa and the monks' quarters. Now, the monks run a small tourist
lodge and use the income to restore the entire monastery.
Eco Himal will support the following activities:
- Lodge management training
- Training of one monk as Amchi (traditional Tibetan healer)
- Complete renovation of the stupa in front of the monastery
Trakar Tasso Monastery
Trakar Tasso is located in the remote Kiyrong
valley on the border to Nepal on a steep cliff overlooking
the river. Since the famous poet and religious leader Milarepa spent
many years there, the monastery is visited by many faithful worshippers.
The monastery urgently needs a water system
to provide the nuns and visitors with clean drinking water. Eco
Himal has promised financial support within its Co-financing scheme.
