Cultural Cooperation

Cultural cooperation is not limited to conservation and restoration but includes the application of new cultural technologies in a socially-balanced way.

Consequently, Eco Himal supports Nepal's first private radio station, "Radio Sagarmatha", a not-for-profit radio with a public mission.

In a country where more than 60% of the population cannot read or write, the radio is the medium of choice for providing information, entertainment and education to a broad public. Independent media are one of the prerequisites for a functioning democracy.

The program features topics relevant to the communities in the Kathmandu valley and beyond and aims at raising awareness for public issues. One major campaign focuses on waste prevention and disposal.

The Austrian funds are used for purchasing technical equipment, financing training courses for journalists and investments in program quality.

Eco Himal also works with numerous culture groups and supports old traditions and new waves.

In cooperation with the Kathmandu University Department of Music in Bhaktapur, a series of traditional music productions (Vanishing Culture Collection) is supported, among them the music of the Tibetan nomads.

Eco Himal also supports efforts to develop quality Nepalese film productions (Kathmandu Mountain Film Festival).

Cultural Cooperation: Austrians in Nepal (pdf)

An exhibition of paintings by the famous artist Hari Prasad Sharma entitled Kathmandu Valley down the Ages depicting ancient Nepalese culture was supported.

The objective of this project is to inspire children and youth to appreciate their own culture and heritage. Workshops were held to stimulate creativity among school children, art students and media people.

A photo exhibition entitled Mapping Modernity was organized together with the Nepal Photographic Society, showcasing 55 photographs capturing moments of modernity in contemporary Nepal.

The bookIn the Land of Heart’s Desire” about the experiences of a female volunteer working in development projects in Nepal was also supported
(available at the Eco Himal Shop).

A conference on “Income generating activities in rural areas” was organized together with local NGOs and SNV/Dutch Development Cooperation.
