Solar Equipment for Hospitals

Tibet

Gutsho Hospital

Gutsho is located on the Arniko Highway (overland connection between Lhasa and Kathmandu). Gutsho hospital was opened in 1995 and serves the nomadic families in this region as well as the local villagers. From the start, Eco Himal has supported the hospital with private funds raised in Austria from the start.

A good energy supply is the major problem of the hospital. The most common solution, a diesel generator is not acceptable for ecological reasons. However, since the Tibetan plateau enjoys a high percentage of sunshine, the use of solar panels seems the obvious choice. With a continuous supply of electricity, patients can be treated during the night and vaccinations and medication can be stored properly. Both the hospital and staff rooms can be electrified at economical rates.

In 2002, the patients' rooms were renovated, the hospital was provided with additional medical equipment allowing for a better quality of medical services.

Tsome Hospital is located on the route to Western Tibet in the Porong region. Construction was financed fully by Eco Himal. The hospital is the only one in the area and provides medical services for the nomads living within 3-4 days walking distance. In addition to western medicine, the doctors also practice traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine. Most of those seeking help are treated as out-patients.

Solar equipment was installed so  that medication and vaccines can be refrigerated and patients can be treated outside daylight hours. Electricity will be available in the most important rooms as well as in the kitchen. The patients' quarters were also improved.

The YuLo Koling Hospital Project

Pictures

The YuLo Koling monastery in the province of Sechuan was built with Austrian donations and in cooperation with Eco Himal. It has living and working quarters for more than 40 nuns. The women come from all over Tibet to study here.

Since the Dzachuka region is at a very high altitude (4,500 - 5,000 m) and is difficult to reach, the local population has very limited access to medical services. Patients have to be taken to the nearest hospital over long distances where transportation is difficult. The YuLo Koling hospital will alleviate this situation and provide the necessary medical treatments for the people in this mountainous region.

The building was finished in the fall of 2003. Water supply, solar electricity and interior furnishings will be installed in 2004.

The hospital offers a combination of traditional Tibetan and Chinese as well as Western medicine which complement each other. Apart from the out-patients department and the hospital rooms for 50 - 100 patients, the project also includes a training centre for medical staff.
