ändliche Entwicklung im Arun-Tal

Rural Development Solu/Khumbu

The project area is located in the districts Solu Khumbu and Khotang, far off the historic trading and modern trekking routes. The area is difficult to reach and therefore marginalized with hardly any infrastructure.

The people are largely subsistence farmers, there are no other wage-earning opportunities in the area. Many houses are deserted, young men leave to work as porters or trekking guides in neighbouring Khumbu. A high percentage of older people and women in the local population, high out-migration and low educational standards are characteristic for the project region.

In order to improve the living conditions, the following measures were initiated:

  • construction of bridges and paths
  • construction of compost toilets
  • community shops
  • schools and health posts
  • drinking water supply

As in all Eco Himal projects the infra-structural improvements are accompanied by comprehensive training programs: teaching women to read and write, teacher training, adult education in health and hygiene, First Aid courses and agricultural trainings)

Another important feature is capacity-building by establishing organisational structures (user groups, women's groups, etc.) in order to ensure the desired course of development in the long run.
