Village Development Thame Valley/ Sagarmatha National Park

The Thame Valley lies to the north west of Namche Bazar, the central market place in the "land of the Sherpa". Over the past 25 years, the standard of living among the people in the Sagarmatha National Park has improved significantly thanks to the revenues from tourism.

However, the Thame Valley has not benefited from this development, since the major flow of tourists is directed towards the Mt. Everest base camp.

The main source of income of the Thame valley inhabitants is still limited to subsistence farming at altitudes between 3400 and 4200 m. The establishment of the National Park and the imposition of restrictions on land and forest use as well as the inflated market prices in Namche Bazar due to tourism have imposed further hardships on the local farmers.

Basic infrastructure for Thame Valley

Eco Himal has therefore set up a four-year project (1999 - 2002) to improve the infrastructure of the villages in the Thame Valley which includes the following measures:

  • Supplying small villages (Ilajung, Theso and Samsing) and the Kyarok monastery with electricity
  • Providing one village (Samde) with solar energy
  • Trail and bridge building
  • The construction of accommodation for teachers
  • Improving the school system
  • Establishing a health post
  • Construction of public drinking water taps and compost toilets
  • Supporting agricultural training and income-generating activities
  • Preserving the cultural heritage
  • Reducing soil erosion through intensive reforestation programs
  • improving the environmental situation in the Sagarmatha National Park (removing bottles in the spring of 1999)
