Our Work in Tibet:

The political situation in Tibet renders Eco Himal's work there difficult. Together with our sister organisation Eco Himal Italia and our Spanish partner Comunidad Humana, Eco Himal carries out projects in remote regions of Tibet where infra-structural development lags far behind the more urban areas.

The standard of living in the rural areas has hardly changed over the past 40 years, there are not enough schools and hospitals, the supply with water and electricity is insufficient. But even the agricultural production often fails to feed the Tibetan peasants.

Tibet

Since 1992, funds mainly from private donations were used to build, restore and furnish elementary schools and hospitals. The schools are used as a portal make children aware of prevention of diseases and better hygiene habits. Improved nutrition by growing vegetables in the boarding schools also promotes the health of the pupils.

In order to keep Tibetan culture alive, small monasteries were rebuilt or renovated. In Jharkot, a centre for traditional Tibetan medicine was supported. Eco Himal also financed the modernisation of a textile manufacturing plant in Chideshol. The nomads of Tibet who had lost most of their yaks and sheep in extremely severe winters were supplied with food and textiles. A research project on climatic, geographic and ecological aspects of nomadic animal husbandry was conducted together with the University for Agricultural Research in Vienna.

All projects were financed predominantly by private donors and sponsors and with funds from the Austrian Development Cooperation. Even a small contribution can be used efficiently, be it to support equipment for a school or solar power equipment for a hospital.

All donations for projects in Tibet are used directly for humanitarian relief - there are no deductions for administration.
