Development projects

EcoHimal, the Society for Co-operation Alps-Himalaya, has always been deeply committed to promoting sustainable development in Nepal, Tibet and Pakistan. Currently, we work in the Himalayas as well as in Central Asian mountains – in Nepal, Bhutan and Kyrgyzstan. Our development projects build on an integrated approach involving ecological, economic, social and cultural objectives aimed at long-term sustainability, in line with the guidelines of Austrian and Swiss development cooperation and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Ever since 1992 we have been working in close collaboration with the local communities in our regional development projects. These projects are funded by various state agencies, business partners and sponsors, as well as private donors. Local partners are responsible for covering between 10% and 20% of project expenses.

EcoHimal is an international NGO based in Salzburg, Austria. From Kathmandu, an independent locally registered sister NGO facilitates project work at the grass-roots level.

Assisting rural communities of the Himalayas to a better life, and supporting them in taking the development of their region into their own hands - this is the basic mission of EcoHimal.

Our five main programme sectors are

  • Poverty reduction and capacity building of subsistence farmers
  • Healthcare and regional development in remote areas
  • Biodiversity preservation and sustainable resource management
  • Cultural co-operation and cultural heritage conservation
  • Adaptation to climate change and income generation
